RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Under bright morning skies, players teed off in a 7:30 AM shotgun start at Victoria Golf Course, a Bell-designed par-72, 6,557-yard layout with superb greens, offering fun, challenging “links”-style golf for all Orange Empire competitors.
At the top of the leaderboard, Brady Fonville of Victor Valley College delivered the round of the day, shooting a 5-under 67 to capture medalist honors. Fonville’s performance highlighted a strong showing from Victor Valley College, which placed multiple players near the top. Linus Utter and Logan Marra of College of the Desert and Brady McColm of Victor Valley College each finished at 4-under 68, while Sinjin Armstrong of College of the Desert carded a 3-under 69.
College of the Desert claimed the team title at 13-under, followed by Victor Valley College at 7-under. Orange Coast College and Riverside City College tied for third at +2, while Cypress College finished fifth at +5. Cuyamaca College placed sixth at +14, Mount San Antonio College was seventh at +20, and Mount San Jacinto College rounded out the standings at +39.
For Mount San Jacinto College, the top performance came from Shane Agundez, who finished with a 7-over 79. Shane’s round featured a rocky start, but a strong mental approach and smart course management helped him stay competitive.

“I was +4 through 4 holes and knew that wasn’t who I was as a golfer. I trusted what Coach Bingham told me and just played relaxed. I trusted that I am better than I was playing, and I stuck to that,” Shane said.
The turning point came on the fifth hole, where Shane settled into his rhythm and played even par over the next 13 holes before an unlucky triple bogey on the 18th.
“After my 4th Hole, is where my game turned around. I was even for the next 13 holes until I got an unlucky break on my last hole. My mental game is getting so much better as we go,” he said.
Agundez credited both course management and consistent ball striking for his ability to avoid bigger numbers on a difficult course.
Several Eagles contributed to the team’s overall score behind Agundez:

- Anthony Saavedra – 9-over 81
- Akoni Johnson – 11-over 83
- Mac Brigham – 12-over 84
- Donovan Morton – 13-over 85
- Jacob Aylward – 13-over 85
Anthony Saavedra, the second-best performer for Mount San Jacinto College, felt confident about his round despite a late bogey:

“I feel like my ball striking kept me in it most of the day. On the last hole, I just made a small mistake, and it cost me. It sucks, but it happens. I just try not to think about it too much and move on, because one hole doesn’t define the whole round,” he said.
“I feel good overall. I know I was really close to shooting something better, so it gives me confidence. I just got to clean up a few mistakes, and I’ll be in a really good spot next time.”
Despite finishing eighth as a team, the tournament provided valuable experience for Mount San Jacinto College as the team continues conference play. With strong individual efforts from Shane and Anthony, the Eagles will look to build on consistency and translate it into stronger team results in upcoming events.
