Behind The Scenes of The Magic: Cosplay Photographers

WonderCon is the colorful cosplay and photography-filled sister to San Diego Comic-Con. Taking place on March 27-29th in 2026, the weekend was filled with comic writers, artists, cosplayers, and photographers. Last year, I focused on the cosplayers at Wondercon, but who’s behind capturing the essence and beauty of the costumes? Photographers. Every year, photographers come to Wondercon to capture their best photos of the year for social media and personal portfolios. Every photographer has their own style, and multiple photographers can capture the same cosplayer in the same outfit in such unique ways.
Now, when you think of a photographer at a con, what comes to mind? Random strangers on their phones asking for pictures? While that can happen, the real photographers come to the convention with their gear ready and spots for photos picked out ahead of time. WonderCon, in particular, has a beautiful walkway in front of the convention center hall, lined with trees and grass, and multiple waterfalls to take advantage of. In the heart of Anaheim, California, the sun is great for morning and evening shoots, but it’s after the sun goes down when photographers really get to play.
Bringing along full lighting setups, most cosplay photographers prefer to create their own light rather than take a chance on the angle of the sun at a particular time during the day. While some bring regular yellow and golden lights, others favor more colorful lights for their picture backdrops. Depending on the costume, photographers get to play with angles and colors best after dark at Wondercon.
Along with lighting, different lenses can make a huge difference in photos for cosplay. A wide lens can capture an almost film-like essence of the character and background. You can even use lenses with different effects. For a character like Black Canary a photographer could use a lens that would add a tunnel vision effect to get a sonic scream looking like it’s about to come straight at you.

The photographers at Wondercon don’t always get the credit they deserve, with the cosplayers standing in front of the camera looking flashy. We often forget the amount of work, time, and effort that goes into getting the perfect shot. Not to mention how much equipment costs for each individual photographer, and what they decide to bring to the convention.
Darthiqmedia on Instagram said, “The equipment that I brought with me this weekend, not including my laptop, would probably cost around 20,000 dollars.”
Without including his laptop, he said! That’s crazy! If I carried around 20k worth of equipment, I would certainly not want it at a convention where it could easily break or be stolen. The photographers at this convention love what they do. They don’t do this because it’s cheap or easy; they do it for the love of the game.
Ravenclaw501st on Instagram said Wondercon is one of his favorite conventions, “I take this (his film camera) to very specific cons, not all cons, but the ones that I know there’s going to be heavy photography like Wondercon, AX, and LACC.”

WonderCon experienced a heavy decline in attendees this year as it fell on the same weekend as C2E2, the biggest comic con in the Midwest. Many attendees travel to both cons, but when they are on the same weekend, it calls for people to pick and choose which convention to attend for the week. Even without the usual heavy traffic in years past, Wondercon thrived, and I thought the lighter crowds made it easier to navigate and to get everything done in one weekend, but it does call for a lack of cosplayers and photographers.
Many people enjoyed the lighter crowds, though. It made it easier for photographers to capture the cosplays they enjoyed without waiting in line. And cosplayers were able to get tons of photos taken of themselves! While talking to attendees, people said they preferred Wondercon over C2E2 and decided to come here instead because of its more low-key atmosphere. Wondercon has always had a good lineup of guests and panelists, but they tend to focus away from the big actors and more on the side of comics writers and artists and voice actors. While C2E2 has mainly focused on big-name actors for their guest lists, which is always nice to experience, it can make a convention crowded with lines and people struggling to get places.
Attendees who come to comic cons for photography don’t necessarily come for these big-name celebrities, though, and I think that’s why, despite the decrease in attendee size, some great photographers still came and showed up to Wondercon. The atmosphere is much more friendly to getting things done. “It’s less downtime and more creative time,” Darthiqmedia said. At the end of the day, it’s creative people coming together to create things they love, whether it’s cosplayers creating costumes or photographers creating stunning photos. WonderCon is one of the best places to get together with people and collaborate with others to create magic!
The Anaheim Convention Center is beautifully spaced out with wonderful walkways full of plants and generous locations for great photos. One of the most common spots for pictures is the broken fountain right in front of the hall’s center. It’s got staircases going up to the top of the fountain, and the background is the convention center hall, and you can usually catch the sun glancing off the building windows and the Wondercon sign in the back!

The attendees of Wondercon are always some of the friendliest people I have ever met, and I don’t think a year will go by that I won’t attend. Meeting people and other creatives is the best part about conventions like these, and the easy-going atmosphere of Wondercon makes it so simple to meet like-minded people. WonderCon also hosts meetups for different fandoms every day at different times. Cosplayers can come and meet other cosplayers from the same fandom, and photographers get the chance to snap pictures of something that might be their niche! I attended the DC comics meetup this year after having gone to the Marvel comics meetup last year, and while both were similar and in the same spot, this year, with the smaller crowd, I was able to talk to way more people!
The DC meetup this year was sectioned first into one giant group photo, then smaller photos based off of collective cosplays, with a Gotham-themed group, a villains group, a Teen Titans group and more! Photographers get a few minutes to take pictures of each group before they move on to the next, but some of my favorite photos came from that meetup. Look at this Teen Titans/Young Justice group!

With the meetups being run by the photographers there, it’s always nicely organized so everyone fits into the photos and looks their best! After the large group meetups, photographers usually spend some time one-on-one with cosplayers they want photos of, getting solos and duos for their repertoire. WonderCon is a great place to make content in the realm of cosplay and photography, so if you have any desire to get started, I would suggest attending next year to get the feel for things!
